|
Steve Hallas, Jon Green, Steve Smith and Sharon Trusch from Preston Harriers along with Averil McClelland from Lancaster and Morecambe AC went over to Sheffield to compete in this meeting and for Steve, Jon and Averil it was a chance to get some competition in before the World Masters Indoor Championships being held in Canada in early March. In the 400m, Sharon competed in the second heat along with the men as there were unfortunately few female participants. She acquitted herself well coming 2nd in the race in 60.45 the winning male clocking 60.08. Next to compete was Steve Smith in heat one of the 800m. This turned out to be a fast race as the winner, Anthony Whiteman, used to be an international runner for GB. He finished in 1.55.14. Steve was happy with his run coming 4th in 2.08.05. Sharon was in heat three of the 800m, again with the men and again having a good run to come 2nd in the race flying in behind Fred Pidgeon, the winner who clocked 2.25 with Sharon 2.31.46. The athletes had barely cleared the track when Sharon was running again in the women’s 200m. This time there was competition for her and she rose to the challenge winning the race in 28.05 from Averil, 28.42 with third in 29.04. Steve Hallas and Jon were in the first heat of the 3000m which turned out to be good race. Steve took it on from the gun and led throughout. His position was threatened on lap 12 but he responded and the opposition faded being caught by Jon who had kept third place most of the race, however coming off the final bend a well timed surge brought him home in 2nd. Steve clocked 9.18.51, Jon 9.21.80. |
